Some of the best memories I have with my family is game night. Shockingly, my family will sit down and play board games together every now and again. These aren’t just a regular store bought board game like Monopoly or Sorry, we have a collection of grand master board games. Large, extensive and expensive adventures to array on a table. There has been a whole array of people to play at our table, from siblings, and other family members, to random strangers, I had only met for the first time sitting at the table. It seems like some days, the best bonds are made playing at The Game Table. Typically, there are a few regulars at our antique, 8 person wooden table. Myself, my twin brother, and my older brother. ADHD and Procrastination Clinical and non-clinical methods to treat ADHD has gathered momentum ever since, the syndrome of this disorder began to surface alarmingly in children. ADHD is mostly associated with emotional and behavioral disorders and because of this, professionals find it difficult to diagnose. It can therefore be said that ADHD is more than the inability to focus; it is a self-regulatory disorder. Such symptoms as inattentiveness and impulsiveness occur across a range of childhood problems and can be misleading. We see that most people behave in a conscientious manner, because of which these people are well organized, efficient and responsible. Understanding conscientious behavior is relatively simple. Take for example people working in offices or those who run their own business. They are very calculative and do things only after evaluating and understanding a situation. They have a relatively high level of conscientiousness. These people are in complete contrast to those who have ADHD. These people are easy-going and careless in their attitude. It is because of their low level of conscientiousness that they tend to procrastinate. These ADHD affected people see too many choices and try and take everything that comes their way without filtering their choices that ultimately leads to ambiguity. Because they face too many possibilities at the same time, they lack focus and end up doing nothing. What could have led to the development of ADHD? It’s quite complicated to pinpoint the exact cause for such disorders developing. But scientific research has revealed that toxic chemicals that are found in food, carpeting and fl ooring, cleaning agents and even toothpastes can cause mental disorders. There’s a spectrum of possibilities that cause ADHD. Commonly, it is said to start at an early age and if left unattended, could cause serious problems in adult life. Several governmental and non-governmental organizations and groups have attempted to develop techniques to counter and heal children affected by ADHD. Be it clinical or non-clinical, results drawn from various research has shown the positive and negative sides in clinical and non-clinical treatment. ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Deficiency is a major cause for worry among children in their early years of growth. If this is not treated early, this could cause severe damage to that person’s mental condition in his/her adulthood. Just as the name indicates, â€Å"children with ADHD are prone to hyperactivity. They are restless, and are constant movers. They find it difficult to remain static or concentrate in any particular situation. They squirm and fidget in their seats or roam around the room. Or they may wiggle their feet, touch everything, or noisily tap their pencil. Being impulsive, these children are unable to control their emotions or actions and are likely to blurt out inappropriate comments, display their emotions without restraint, and act discontentedly without understanding the consequences of their outburst. Their hyperactivity is such that they can be at times unmanageable and cause hurt to others around them unintentionally. This is the reason why such children should be handled with care and understanding† (NIHM, 2006). Due to the complexity of this disorder, it has been observed that in the event of suspected ADHD, diagnosis is entrusted to qualified professionals with training in ADHD, such as child psychiatrists, psychologists, developmental/behavioral pediatricians, behavioral neurologists, and clinical social workers. After a systematic evaluation of the symptoms, and ruling out other possible reasons for the child’s behavior, the specialist check the child’s school and medical records, interact with the affected child’s teachers and parents, before they are asked to fill out a behavior rating scale for the child. Only after completion of the positive evaluation will these experts consider diagnosis. The best way forward is to make them focus on one particular activity and ensure that they complete it before moving on to another set of activities. Don’t try to enforce anything on these people. In most cases, they would find the activity boring as they are made to fol low a certain activity and not many as they would ideally do. People with ADD/ADHD require constant stimulation. There have been cases reported where people with such disorders have been said to be physically uncomfortable when forced to pay attention to a ‘boring’ task. Even employees working in an organization, when asked to continuously work on a particular job, find it boring and tend to lose interest. In order to stimulate them, managers ensure that they go through a rotational program where every employee takes on a different job periodically so that boredom doesn’t creep in. Therefore, even for those with ADD/ADHD, to stimulate them, there has to be a structured procrastination, wherein, a task can be done using time crunch pressure/creativity which ultimately does ensure that the task at hand is completed successfully. The focus should be on completing a task that is given. Other than using any form of pressure, organize the activity in such a way that it ensures fun and stimulates the mind to the job in hand. Stimulant medicines can improve attention and reduces hyperactivity and impulsiveness, but this is not a long-drawn solution as it may not help an affected person to communicate or interact socially with other people. It is important to understand the correct level of medication required by a person affected by ADHD. Dosage varies in children and adults and the reaction of children and adolescents to medication should be monitored carefully and the dosage reviewed regularly, to identify the best level for a child† (Chacko et al., 2005). Just as hard it may seem to understand the complexity of ADHD; some parents do see signs of inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsivity in their children much before they even go to school. Signs such as, losing interest in playing or watching TV, and walking around without direction are all too common among children affected by ADHD. But because children mature at different ages and have diverse personality, temperament, and energy levels, its hard to tell whether a child is normal or is ADD/ADHD-affected. This is because parents tend to take the behavior of their children as part of the growing up process and neglect cases which need immediate attention. Such behavior is often passed off as being immature or unusually exuberant. Conclusion ADHD being a complex clinical disorder of the brain, not much has been witnessed in the treatment and research in this field. Most treatment has been spontaneous and in accordance with standard procedures. These practices need to change, and a proper approach must be mandated to cure and relieve conditions of the mind. Though many practices are in vogue, no set pattern is followed. While interventions such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy and social skills training are available and are said to be the safe options to treat ADHD, many practitioners continue to prefer medication as the most preferred option, as it offers faster relief and control. The idea of introducing structured procrastination to stimulate these ADD/ADHD affected individuals is a safe option and reduces the chances of any side effect that medicines could have on them. In the short story Flight Patterns, Sherman Alexie describes how the protagonist, William, a Spokane Indian, struggles every day to escape the all too common stereotypes society places him under. This story takes place in Washington D.C. during the year after 9/11, which most likely justifies why racial profiling and stereotyping was extremely commonplace in the story around this time. Happiness is defined as an emotional state that indiciates our satisfaction with life; a measure of how favorable we perceive the overall quality of our lives to be. Nowadays all we ever worry about is getting dressed to go to school OR work and driving through traffic in the car that we’re STILL paying for to EVENTUALLY get to the job that we need TO PAY for the clothes, AND the car, AND the house that lays vacant all day, so that we can eventually afford to live in it. People have many stresses in life, however, most of them seem to revolve around money-Whether that be not having enough money or having all the wealth in the world is not significant as both lead to problems and stress- This is clearly shown by the 76% of American families that are living pay check to pay check and the long list of famous celebrities such as BraddPitt and AngelinaJolie, that have battled some serious depression! You probably think that the happiest people live in the more wealthier countries such as Australia, Canada the US, but survey’s have actually found that the world’s happiest people reside in Portorico and Mexico- Portorico has one of the highest murder rates as well as double digit unemployment; Mexico also has very high crime rates and continues to fight the war against drugs and gang violence. Canada was rated 17th in the world in a survey regarding the happiness of the popoulation- It showed that 75% of Canadians were happy on a daily basis, which sounds like a pretty good stat, but you’re probably wondering, who ranked NUMBER 1? Iceland, a country that has a BELOW-AVERAGE NET-DISPOSABLE INCOME and experienced a finaaaaancial meltdown that was FAR WORSE than the one in the U. S. had the happiest population, where 94% of its people were genuinely and consistently happy with their lives. Could this ALL be because of our differences in media consumerism and capitalism? YES. So, does money really buy happiness? NO. Research also shows that Nigerians are the most optimistic people in the world yet they don’t have a lot to be thankful for. Out of 175 countries, Nigeria is ranked 152 for life expectancy, health, education, standard of living literacy. Nigerians also live in one of the most corrupt country’s with a very unreliable government, high voiolence rates, and human life that is considered cheap, YET, despite this all, they are the most optimistic people in the world. As the saying goes, â€Å"HAPPY PEOPLE ARE THE HOPE-FILLED, â€Å" or in other words, THE OPTIMISTIC. † *These results simply defy the conventional thought that money buys happiness. Journalist Richard Urngeburg once said that, â€Å"We work hard, earn lots of $, HAVE THE ABILITY to spend on expensive luxaries such as flatscreen tv’s, SUV’s. We indulge, we gratify, therefore, we expect to be the happiest damn people on the planet, SO why aren’t we? Well, by actively living a decent material life with all basic needs PLUS more, numerous studies have found, will actually result in the adjustment our expectations to think that we need EVERYTHING that we don’t ALREADY have. Due to the media and this obsession that $money gives people happiness, we begin to think that EVERYTHING is a basic need. In today’s world, technology such as cell phones are even considered BASIC needs†¦ At first when I heard this, I thought, psht, I’m pretty sure I could get through a day JUST FINE without my cell phine, but lets be real here. †¦. Picture a day WITHOUT your cellphone†¦ -All those missed calls texts; it feels like you’re just totally disconnected from the world sometimes and like EVERYTHING that you do is just SOO much more complicated†¦. Or how about having to walk to school or work and realizing that you forgot your ipod at home making the walk automically seem so much longer and boring†¦ *So since when did all this technology start to take over and dictate our level of happiness? We’ve become so mindless have allowed ourselves to believe that IN ORDER TO BE HAPPY and fit in with today’s world, that we need the most up-to-date versions of EVERYTHING *It is definitely important to have money and the things that it can buy, BUT it’s even MORE important to make sure that we haven’t become COMPLETELY trapped by the media and lost the things, meaning the NON-materialistic, that money simply CANNOT buy. According to a world values survey, Media consumerism IS actually a leading factor of WHY, ALTHOUGH money can buy us many, many things, happiness can never TRULY be one of them. So if it isn’t really $ that makes people happy, then what do all of these countries that I mentioned earlier have in common that makes their popoulations sooo much happier than others? – Well, they have a strong sense of community, as well as greatly enthuastic celebrations; celebrations that encourgae them to give thanks show appreciation for the simple things that they share, such as talent, culture, love eachother. Portoricans have 500 public festivals a year! Mexicans Nigerians also celebrate many communal occasions and mark them with colorful attire, songs dance. IT IS THESE types of *societal relationships, interdependence, and community sharing that promote positive feelings within the greater public. ****It has been shown that by taking better care of ourselves, we naturally begin to care more about others. This happiness is infectious, hence why the saying â€Å" happiness comes from people â€Å" is absolutely true!!! Being happy around others enjoying the simple joys of life allows them to feel and do the same!!! So yes, there are many things in life that $money will definitely buy and fix very easily, however it appears that happiness can NEVER be one of them, no matter how therapeutic it may seem sometimes. For those of you that still DISAGREE and feel that numbers matter, then just look at them for yourselves. If you want to live a happier life, it is not something that you can just go to the store and buy nor is it something that can be learned. *It has to be something that YOU truly want to experience and endure; it requires the putting forth of PERSONAL EFFORTS and the INNER DESIRE to actually want to be happy make THOSE AROUND YOU happy as well! Money can replace something like a car or a house, but it can’t replace a friendship, or a relationship, or even a day at the beach IN THE SUN with your best friend. SO, please, don’t think that your day just got â€Å"so much more worse â€Å" because you lost your cell phone; ALL it means is that you can finally get to appreciate the atmosphere around you more and enjoy life as it was truly made to be like. Don’t let ANYTHING, BUT yourself, dictate your day and level of happiness; make your day what YOU want it to be because a TRULY happy person is one who can actually enjoy the scenery outside while on a detour. ** Happiness is not money, it’s not a tv nor an SUV; happiness is what YOU make it.
